How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

Creating the perfect cloth diaper stash can be fun and ever expanding because of all the cute diapers available. The question that always comes up (mostly by dads) is how many diapers do we actually need. The answer to this question can vary from person to person and baby to baby. Some things to consider… What kind of diapers are you using? Do you use sized pocket diapers, one size pocket diapers, fitted diapers with covers or prefolds with covers? How long do you want your diapers to last? Will you be saving your diapers for another child in the future or just using them on one baby? And finally, how old is your baby?
A newborn baby typically needs to be changed 10-15 times a day, 2 to 6 month old babies usually use 10-12 diapers a day and 6+ months often use 6-10 diapers a day. You should wash your diapers every other to every third day. I personally stared with 18 diapers and have worked my way up to well above 50 diapers for my two little ones.
If you are using a one size diaper and plan on using them for more children I recommend having between 25 and 40 diapers in your rotation. This may seem like a lot, but when you consider the fact that these diapers will be washed around 180 times a year and will be worn for two years by one child and then for two more years by each subsequent child the wear and tear can really take its toll on your diapers. Families that use sized pockets, fitted diapers and prefolds with covers can typically get by with 15-20 diapers in each size with 6-8 covers in their rotations. These diapers will be washed less over time because they are sized and your baby will eventually grow out of them, meaning you will purchase more diapers when the next size is needed.

These Diapers are great!
